The farm is approximately 12 minutes to Marco de Canaveses, 14 minutes to Baião,
24 minutes to Pala, on the river Douro, 30 minutes to Amarante, 45 minutes to Guimarães, and 55 minutes to Porto.
The Area:
Marco de Canaveses, on the river Tamega, has 5 large supermarkets, cafés, restaurants,
banks, medical centres, state schools, swimming pools, gyms, language and music schools, a
hospital and many shops. Its notable for the award-winning church by Siza Vieira, a major
Roman archaeological site (Tongobriga), the Fidalgo ruins, beautiful walks and old churches
and bridges, traditional gastronomy and for being the birth place for Carmen Miranda (the
museum and library are opposite the hospital). In mid-summer, there is a Roman fair, the
town festas are in July, and in September there is a Medieval fair. The area round the river
has been developed to make it a great place for running, walking and picnics. Theres a small
harbour if you have a boat, and a canoe club. For those who love to dance, there are lively
bars and discos.
The ancient Romanesque-style city of Amarante is a must-see for anyone who visits or
stays in the area. With its roots in the Stone Age, the current city dates back to the 12th
century, and is marked by the magnificent church or St. Gonçalo in front of the roman bridge
over the river Tamega. It is said to have helped local forces fight off a French attack in the
19th century, and the bridge bears a plaque describing how Napoleonic forces were fought off.
Guimarães was the birthplace of Portugal, and boasts two castles, both of which are open
to the public. The current city dates back to the 9th century, although there is evidence of
Roman occupation and even settlements since the late Chalcolithic period.
It is a UNESCO world heritage city, and was the European city of culture in 2012.
